THE WORK:

While history is sequential and chronological, my approach to our studies is a little different than the traditional read each chapter, memorize important names and dates, and regurgitate these disconnected, discrete facts on a test.

I see my challenge as a teacher as helping students learn to think deeply about the ISSUES around which our country took shape.  So reading our textbook is important, to give students the necessary background information about the events of our nation’s past.  But the challenging part is understanding the controversies and concerns of our past in both the context of that time period, and seeing how these issues are still part of the fabric of our nation today.  Rote memorization is not a skill I stress in my teaching – but knowing the meaning behind the terms is (for example, what is the connection between Marbury v. Madison and the recent Supreme Court vacancies?).

We have assigned readings in our textbooks or the ancillary materials I give out almost every night, and there are often a few questions related to the reading that students must answer (in ink or typed, using complete sentences and supporting details – that’s the former English teacher speaking!).  I like summative projects more than paper and pencil tests, but I do use both approaches in the course.  I give out lots of extra credit opportunities, which are basically mini-research questions, requiring students to cite their source and paraphrase the information in their own words.

I am flexible about deadlines and make-up work, to a point.  After the 3rd chance, time’s up!  On the other hand, I am well aware that personal crises can impact a student’s life enormously, and one of the reasons I love working at SMA is the complete dedication and commitment I see here to really helping students succeed.  From our top administrators through our impressive custodial staff, I am blown away by the efforts made to assist our kids.  So. . .if your student is encountering any difficulties, either academic or personal, I welcome parents’ input and advice on how to best help her/him.

I absolutely love teaching here at SMA.  The caliber of our students, both academically and on a personal level, is truly impressive.  It is an honor and a privilege to be part of this great institution.
