Sarasota Military Academy
Class Expectations for Biology I
Captain Lee
Fall 2008
Course Overview:
Welcome to an exciting year in science. My goal, and hopefully
yours, is to be as successful as possible in this important
course. The purpose of Biology I is to provide students with
basic knowledge in biology. As our society increasingly becomes
dependent on technology, this understanding and enthusiasm for
science is essential for the student’s long term success.

Science and technology multiply around us. To an
increasing extent they dictate the languages in
which we speak and think. Either we use those
languages, or we remain mute. -J.G. Ballard |
One of the most important connections in achieving success is
between parent, student and teacher. The area where the parent
support is most critical is in homework and studying.
Homework will not be assigned often. Time in class will be
given to start homework, allowing the student time to ask
questions if necessary. Homework will be checked for completion
and basic understanding of the assignment. If there is any
confusion about a problem on the homework, the student will be
able to ask questions when we are reviewing homework in class
the following day. I look forward to student’s questions and
participation in class.
Required Materials each day:
·
-Three
ring binder or notebook with dividers.
·
-Composition notebook
·
-Pencil, black or blue pen
Behavior:
·
-Conduct yourself at all times in accordance with the Sarasota
County Schools and SMA/JROTC codes of conduct
·
-Come to class prepared and with all of the above materials each
day
·
-Stay on task
·
-Be in your seat on time and remain seated unless instructed
otherwise
·
-Follow instructions the first time they are given
·
-Actively listen when either the teacher or other students are
talking
Grades, homework, and help:
1.
Homework will be posted on the board each day at the beginning
of class. This will also be posted on the School web site.
Homework must be completed for the beginning of class the
following school day. Homework will not be accepted late
(with the exception of an excused absence); it is important to
be available to review in class. All homework and class work to
receive credit must have the proper headings clearly labeled.
Each daily assignment will be evaluated as follows:
Completed satisfactorily with work shown…………………………….…2 pts.
Incomplete (at least half completed with work shown)…………………...1
pt.
Not turned in, less than half completed or proper work not
shown………0pts.
2.
Students are responsible to find out what work has been missed
and to make it up promptly for any absences.
3.
Reading: Each student is required to have a
personal reading book for my class. Compliance will be checked
periodically given a grade.
4.
Quizzes and tests: Quizzes will be given periodically, will be
announced ahead of time, and written on the board in advance.
All tests will be announced and given at the end of each
chapter. Since all tests are announced well in advance, tests
will be taken on the day scheduled.
5.
Labs will be graded on both accuracy and participation.
6.
Grading Policy:
90 - 100 A Tests /
Quizzes……….….........40%
80 – 89 B Labs /
Classwork…...................30%
70 – 79 C
Homework……………….........10%
60 – 69 D
Employability skills…...............20%
7.
A computer printout of the student’s grades will be given out
once each quarter, in addition to a progress report in the
middle of the grading period. It will be very helpful if parents
will expect and look for, then sign and return these updates.
Parents may contact me by phone through the school. I will
return calls from school that day or from home that night. The
preferred option is to contact me through e-mail at
Ryan_Lee@sarasota.k12.FL.US
8.
Any student can make a good grade (A or B) if they do all
assignments on schedule and if they consistently study. I expect
every student to make this effort, and I will do everything in
my power to make this high achievement a reality.
9.
Items included in the employability grade include; attendance,
in class on time and in their seats ready to work, bringing
required work tools including text, proper class notes and class
work in notebook, appropriate behavior, attitude of cooperation
with teacher and fellow students, proper wearing of prescribed
uniform, and time in class is devoted to the appropriate task.
10.
Some of this material will be confusing and you may need extra
help. I will be available after school when needed. It is up to
you to take advantage of this.
Lab
Fee
Each
student is asked to donate a $10.00 as a lab fee. Your
contribution will help purchase new equipment. It is very much
appreciated!
