Spring 2012

Course Overview

Anatomy and physiology are fascinating, ever-changing and exciting areas of study. We will work to open doors to a lifetime of understanding and appreciation of the marvels of the natural world. In addition, students will be encouraged to love learning and to take an active role in our world.

One of the most important connections in achieving success is between parent, student and teacher. The area in which parent support is most critical is homework. Homework will be assigned often, and on average should take the student 20 – 30 minutes to complete. I will check homework for completion and basic understanding, or grade it question by question. Homework is due at the beginning of the next day’s class!! I wholeheartedly recommend you do your homework at home and by yourself. Late work is not accepted.

I look forward to students’ questions and participation in class. In my classes there is a direct correlation between students who complete homework and ask questions with how the students perform on tests and their final grade. We have a huge amount of material to cover and it is imperative to do homework daily.

Required materials each day

  • Textbook:   Essentials of Human Anatomy and Physiology (2006). Each student will be issued a text and a supplementary workbook for the course. The texts are brand new and need to be taken care of. They cost about $100 per copy and will need to be replaced by students if they are damaged (beyond normal wear and tear) or lost. The supplementary workbook is the student’s to keep.
  • Three-ring binder with dividers.   Notes, labs and presentations will be maintained in this notebook. It should be reserved solely for biology class.
  • Punched loose-leaf notebook paper; graph paper is recommended.
  • A plastic ruler that fits into your notebook; must have metric measures
  • Pencil, black AND red pen for every day use in class
  • A set of colored pencils (about 20 different colors)

*Cell phones will not be allowed to be used or even be in sight in class, and will not suffice as a calculator.  If yours makes a noise or I see it in class, a referral will result.

Behavior:  “Discipline is Freedom”

·         Conduct yourself at all times in accordance with the Sarasota County schools and SMA/JROTC codes of conduct;

·         Come to class prepared and with all of the above materials

·         Stay on task

·         Be in your seat on time and remain seated unless instructed otherwise.

·         Follow instructions the first time they are given

Homework, grades and help

Homework will be posted on the board each day at the beginning of class; it is also posted (subject to change), on my page of the sarasotamilitaryacademy.com website or the class blog at doughewins.edublogs.org. Homework will not be accepted late (with the exception of an excused absence); it is important to be available to review in class. To receive credit, all homework and class work must be properly labeled with name, date and period.

1.      Students are responsible to find out what work has been missed when absent and to make it up promptly.

2.      Quizzes and tests: Quizzes will be given periodically and will be announced ahead of time. All tests will be announced and will be given at the end of each chapter.

3.      Grading Policy:

90 - 100           A                                             Tests.........................40%

80 - 89             B                                             Quizzes….....................15%

70 - 79             C                       Homework/classwork/labs................25%

60 - 69             D                                             Employabilityskill..........20%

4.      A computer printout of the student’s grades will be given out several times each quarter, in addition to a progress report in the middle of the grading period. It will be very helpful if parents will expect and look for, then sign and return these updates. Parents may contact me by phone through the school at 941.926.1700. I will return calls from school that day or from home that night. The preferred option is to contact me by e-mail at Douglas_hewins @sarasota.k12.fl.us.

Any student can earn a good grade (A or B) if they do all assignments on schedule and if they consistently study. I expect every student to make this effort, and I will do everything in my power to make this high achievement a reality.

5.      Items included in the employability skills grade include: attendance; i.e., being in class, on time and in their seats ready to work with all required materials; non-disruptive behavior, attitude of cooperation with teacher and fellow students, proper wearing of prescribed uniform, and time in class devoted to the appropriate task. For each deduction of employability points, an e-mail will be sent to parents via Snapgrades explaining the infraction.

I am a stickler about students being late to class, and will mark a student tardy immediately when the bell to begin class rings. If a teacher holds a student after class, it is the student’s responsibility to ask for a pass from that teacher to give me to excuse being tardy. Each incidence of tardiness lowers a students’ employability grade for that quarter by 5 points – that can add up quickly.
