Welcome to the Reading department at SMA. The reading department consists of Major Donehew, Lou Salhany and Rob Knight. Mr. Knight is a member of the ESE department but also teaches one class of intensive reading to our ESE students that are required to take intensive reading. Students that score a level 1 or level 2 on the reading portion of the FCAT are required, by state law, to take intensive reading. The amount of instruction required varies by the level the student scores. Level 1 and 2 are broken down further within each level by developmental scale scores (DSS). These levels designate remediation requirements. Some level 2 students are eligible to be serviced within their content area classes by teachers that receive special training. Currently, SMA has 5 trained teachers, with plans to train more content area teachers next year. The training that these teachers receive is quite thorough and rigorous. The teachers currently trained are: Cpt. Mitchell, Major Gillotte, Major Wasserman, Major Lee, and Cpt. Mannion. Please visit Major Donehew’s web page to view intensive reading syllabus and for further details.
CAR-PD classes. Ryan Lee, Sylvia Gillotte, Sharon Mitchel, Robin Mannion, Rachel Wasserman, and guest speaker (in chair to right) Hellen Harvey.
