Hello everyone and welcome to the Sarasota Military Academy and the SMA Music Department! Thank you so much for considering our academy and I highly exhort you to consider becoming a part of our music department and our performing ensembles. We have a wonderful staff that encourages fun and enjoyment in music that can last a lifetime. For more information about our Sarasota Military Academy Drum Line, please click on the "Major Finley" button above. Have a great day! Sincerely, Major Finley
The guitar program at SMA combines practical playing experience with
music theory. The students are from all grade levels and experience.
Because of this there is a great deal of individual and small group
instruction. Students are asked to learn basic chords and strums; music
theory and reading as well as a variety of styles of music including
classical, folk, blues and rock and roll. They learn flat picking as
well as finger-picking. There is time for individual study as well.
This can be learning specific songs that the student likes or styles of
music that only a few students are interested in.. In the end it is my
desire to have well-rounded guitar players who will continue with guitar
or another instrument ,in part, due to their positive experience of
music during their school years.

Hello Cadets and Parents, I am happy once again to be teaching the Great Highland Bagpipe at the Sarasota Military Academy for the ninth year. It is always a pleasure to work with the cadets and watch them begin with the practice chanter and move on to the pipe. The extra performances that the cadets attend throughout the year, is greatly appreciated. Their presence in the community has been a tremendous asset to the academy. If you have any questions regarding performances or questions regarding your cadet please do not hesitate to contact me. Captain Roddy MacDonald ![]()
Captain Sireno Welcome everyone to the Band and Orchestra Web Page! First and foremost, I am honored to be joining the SMA Music Department Staff. I am so looking forward to working with your children and guiding them as they experience the success and the joy music can bring them. Instrumental ensembles have such a strong military tradition in our country, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to further this great American tradition at SMA! Please check the links for more information about the SMA Band and Orchestra.
Captain Thomas Downs Welcome to the choir web page. Choir is for cadets that enjoy singing. Students should be able to sing a tune on pitch and harmonize in tune to a melody line. Our desire is to take the students from singers to performers. Class time requires active participation during our teaching times. We study words and notes to all the songs in our repertoire. Each cadet will be accountable to learn the words and notes to each piece of music in a specified period of time. Only after students are off the paper can we begin to learn performance.
