Fourth Annual
SMA Bookfair

The fourth annual SMA Bookfair will take place November 7th-14th.

The bookfair is open during lunch, after school and other specified times arranged by teachers.

This year we will once again participate in the ONE-FOR-BOOKS program.  For every dollar donated, Scholastic donates a dollar toward children’s charities including:

Kids in Distressed Situations, Inc.,

National Center for Family Literacy,

and Toys for Tots.

The money donated at SMA stays at SMA and will be used to purchase media materials for our school.

In addition to the hours mentioned above the bookfair will remain open late on special Parent days.  Thursday, November 8th or Monday November 12th the bookfair will remain open until 4:30.  The bookfair will also be open the morning of Veteran’s Day before the parade.  Please come in and take a look.  It is not too early to think about those holiday gifts!

If we raise over $1501.00 we will be able to keep 50% profit in books.  What a way to add to our school’s media and classroom books.

See you at the FAIR!!!

Summer Reading…

I have been asked for suggestions for summer reading.  I believe that summer reading is important and have posted reading lists and the web sites mentioned below in the grey box on the right.

A great list of books for each grade level is provided by the State of Florida called Florida Public Schools Recommended Reading List.  There are between 25 and 50 books listed per grade level.

For more recent publications check out the last two years Florida Teens Read Award Nominee lists.  The 2005-2006 list included the book Eragon (that years winner) and Airborn.  The 2006-2007 list includes books like Twilight (the only vampire book I have ever recommended to anyone), Kipling’s Choice a fictionalized biography about Rudyard Kipling’s son during World War I.  Each of these lists have fifteen books on them.  A brief summary of each book is included in the list.

A great internet resource for teen reading comes through the American Library Association.  From there you can locate books that have received awards as well as popular book picks, and books picks for reluctant readers.  The web address to access this is available on the list mentioned above or type in the following URL.  http://www.ala.org/ala/yalsa/teenreading/recreading/recommendedreading.htm

At www.teenreads.com you will find books listed with a brief synopsis for each book.  Across the top of the web site can be located book reviews, new books, an ultimate reading list and more.  This site is also available by clicking on it in the grey box mentioned above.

If parents are looking for information on top books then go to the USA Today website on the list.  There you will fine the Best-Selling Books Database.  As many as 150 top selling books are listed.  Also available at http://asp.usatoday.com/life/books/booksdatabase/default.aspx

All of these sites and lists are great resources for now and the future.  They will remain on the Media Center web page to help with future book choices.

One last website available in the grey box is a connection to an FBI Publication called A Parent’s Guide to Internet Safety.  Please check this website out and see what it says about ways to help your student surf the internet in a safer way.
