Welcome to the

Mathematics Department

at Sarasota Military Academy!

It is our goal to provide your child with a fundamentally strong, dynamic and relevant mathematics education. Whether it’s standardized testing (FCAT, SAT, ACT, and AP), future school prerequisites or career plans, we are working hard to meet the needs of each child.

To this end, SMA offers three strands of math courses. The first two strands provide a starting point from which students can enter and leave as their educational needs change. Successful completion of each strand provides enough math credits for graduation. Completion of the second strand fulfills the course requirements for the Bright Futures Scholarship. In strand three, students can continue their math studies as encouraged by their interest and future plans.

1.          Skill Building

a.         Algebra 1A

b.        Algebra 1B

c.         Geometry

d.        Algebra 2
(Some students choose to take Liberal Arts Math before Algebra 2 in order to strengthen their skills. This is very helpful, but please be aware that Liberal Arts in a general elective and does not count towards the four math credits needed for graduation.)

2.        Traditional

a.         Algebra 1

b.        Geometry

c.         Algebra II

d.        Math Analysis or Precalculus

3.          Advanced Studies

a.         Math Analysis* or

DE Intermediate Algebra & DE College Algebra*

b.        Pre-calculus or

DE College Pre-calculus & De Trigonometry**

c.         Calculus

d.        AP Calculusǂ

* Math Analysis is not required before Pre-Calculus. Math Analysis is typically taken by students looking for a course that has a little slower pace. It is taken as either a student’s final high school math course or as a strengthening course before pre-calculus. The matching dual enrollment courses (Intermediate Algebra & College Algebra) are not specifically required before dual enrollment pre-calc/trig, but must tested out of in order for a student to go directly from Algebra 2 to dual enrollment pre-calc/trig. Students should consult their Algebra 2 teacher for guidance on which upper level path is right for them.

**All of the dual enrollment courses are taken right here at SMA, in lieu of Math Analysis and regular Pre-calculus. Upon successful completion students will receive 3 college credits per course through State College of Florida.

ǂ At the culmination of this course, students should be prepared for taking the AP Calculus AB test. Students may receive college credit for Calculus 1 by scoring a 3 (or better) on this test.
