Captain Aschenbrenneremail: ryan_aschenbrenner@sarasota.k12.fl.us You know, my students often ask me, "Why do we have to learn this? When are we ever going to need to know this in the real world?" I often try to tell them, "Don't think about it as 'you have to learn this.' Instead, consider it as 'you get to learn this.'" It's true, whether we like it or not...knowledge is power. We are the most powerful country in the world due to our intelligence, especially military intelligence that is far superior to other countries. Not everyone in this world gets to learns algebra or geometry or higher level mathematics. Although, those who do have a distinct advantage and a broader path to choose from in the future. I never knew I would be a math teacher. I intended on becoming a mechanical or electrical engineer due to my math and science abilities. Yet, as time went by during my college years, I realized I would like to challenge the next generation to be more than average; to free their mind of academic inhibitions, making their brains sharp enough to step away from calculator dependency. I'm glad SMA has given me the environment suitable to do this, being one of the top college prep schools around. I obtained my education degree from University of Florida, and loved the thought of coming back to Sarasota to teach after realizing Gainesville doesn't even have a beach :)
