Captain Terry Fugate After a career that lasted nearly twenty-three years, I retired from teaching English at Riverview High School in 1994. I thought my teaching days were behind me. But after various volunteer jobs, and eight years as a counselor at Resurrection House, and four decades as theatre critic for the Scene Magazine, I became homesick for the classroom. Thus, when SMA opened, I applied for a teaching position and was accepted. Since joining the faculty I have served as co-chair of the Academy Olympic team; taught freshman, junior and British Literature Honor classes. Five years ago Colonel Kennedy entrusted me with an AP Literature and Composition class. This year we added AP Language to the mix so that now AP English is offered year-around. For those unfamiliar with Advanced Placement English, AP is a rigorous, highly challenging, college-level course. To be officially certified by College Board to teach AP, would-be instructors must submit a yearlong syllabus for each AP course. The College Board has authorized me to teach both AP Language & Literature. As for the course itself, each May the College Board administers tests in both Language and Literature. Happily, the vast majority who’ve taken the “killer test” have passed, with a significant number scoring high enough on the College Board Exam to receive college credit . . . In the end, I consider myself blessed to be able to share my passion for literature and language with so many fine and motivated students.
