                                                     AP Overview

AP Literature & Composition is expressly designed for self-motivated students wishing to succeed in college.  While an in-depth understanding of the uses and abuses of the English literature will be our ongoing focus; we also passionately believe the course actually helps build character and liberating self-motivation.

To that end, AP Literature will consist of the following responsibilities and tasks: Students will come to class each day actively PREPARED to engage in heavy duty reading, writing, speaking and thinking.  In addition, the course includes numerous readings from classical literature; as well as gaining the insights of major British and American writers; plus an originally gathered vocabulary notebook; occasional “Beat the Clock” writing assignments from a variety of sources; and finally, an original paper (with MLA documentation) that will broadly round out the AP curriculum.  [Note: ALL AP activities are subject to modification and change as the practical need arises.]

If future speaks to past, AP Literature & Composition will prove challenging for non-readers taking the course.  Given the endless variety of gadgets and games that compete with print today, this phenomenon is perfectly understandable.  Even so, the wonder is not that deep thinking and serious reading are culturally in retreat, but that legions of young people are still eager to learn, explore and climb the academic heights.

I trust you are as excited your child has signed up for AP Literature & Composition as I am to be the course’s teacher.  Feel free to call me – between 7 & 9 p.m. -- ANY night of the week! (378-2297).  Together you and I can make THE difference!

                                                       Respectfully yours,

                                                    Captain Terry M. Fugate
