                                                     AP Overview

AP Language & Composition is expressly designed for self-motivated students wishing to excel in college.  While an in-depth understanding of the uses and abuses of the English language will be our ongoing focus; we also believe the course significantly helps students build a solid foundation for success in life itself.

To that end, AP Language will consist of the following responsibilities and tasks: Students will come to class each day actively PREPARED to engage in heavy duty reading, writing, speaking and thinking.  In addition, classical literature; the insights of major writers; instructional guides; an originally gathered vocabulary notebook; plus a weekly journal that succinctly examines the best columnists and talking heads on TV; and, finally, a MLA documented Research Paper will broadly round out the AP curriculum (subject to change and practical modification should the need arise).

If future speaks to past, AP Language & Composition will prove challenging for a few non-readers taking the course.  Given the endless variety of gadgets and games that  compete with print today, this phenomenon is perfectly understandable.  Even so, the wonder is not that deep thinking and serious reading are culturally in retreat, but that legions of young people are still eager to learn, explore and climb the academic heights.

I trust you are as excited your child has signed up for AP Language & Composition as I am to be the course’s teacher.  Feel free to call me – between 7 & 9 p.m. -- ANY night of the week! (378-2297).  Together you and I can make THE difference!

                                                       Respectfully yours,

                                                  Captain Terry M. Fugate
