SARASOTA MILITARY ACADEMY ARMY JROTC

LEADERSHIP, EDUCATION, AND TRAINING (LET) LEVEL II SYLLABUS

Teachers:  SFC (R) SANTIAGO, DERRECK, SFC (R) PELLEGRINO, RIESS

Description:  This course will help develop an appreciation for the importance of physical fitness in maintaining good health and appearance. You will learn basic information about nutrition and exercise.  You will also learn about first aid for emergency and non emergency situations as well as an introduction to drug awareness to include the use and effect of drugs, alcohol and substances. You will also explore the values and principles that underlie good citizenship.  Emphasis is placed  on topics such as the importance of the United States Constitution and Bill of Rights; responsibility of U.S. citizens; basic national values; the U.S. federal justice system; and service to the community.  In conjunction with citizenship, cadets are introduced to a variety of significant events and historical figures that contributed to our citizenship and American history.

Core Abilities:  The JROTC core abilities describe the broad, life-long skills that every cadet needs for success in all career and life roles.  They are drawn from the overall goals and values that drive the JROTC program.  Core abilities are not learned in one lesson or Leadership Education Training course, but rather they are linked to lesson competencies in order to integrate or thread them throughout the JROTC curriculum.  In each lesson, the core abilities will be introduced, taught, reinforced and assessed.  Every student should know all of the core abilities as they are essential, value-added skills that every employer seeks.  These core abilities are:

a.       Take responsibility for your actions and choices

b.      Apply critical thinking techniques

c.       Communicate using verbal, non-verbal, visual, and written techniques

d.      Build your capacity for life-long learning

e.       Do your share as a good citizen in your school, community, country and the world

f.       Treat self and others with respect

Grading Policy:

Inspection: 10%

Employability: 20%

Academics:  70%

Student Materials:   Three ring binder and Portfolio

Cadet Notebook:  Students enrolled in this class will be required to have a 3 ring binder for their learning and assessment activities, quizzes, exams, notes and projects.  The learning activities in each Learning Plan tell you what you can do to master the learning objectives and competencies.  They are your assignments.  You will be expected to check off each learning activity in your study guide as you complete it. Assessment activities tell you what you must demonstrate or submit to your instructor for evaluation.  Your instructor will establish deadlines for each assessment.

Cadet Portfolio:  Every cadet will create a portfolio that contains an organized collection of work based on accomplishments, personality and aspirations.  The portfolio will begin upon entry in the JROTC program and be maintained for the duration of your enrollment in the program. The portfolio will reflect the student’s best work and provide insight and information on the cadet’s personal achievements and growth over time.

Grooming Standards & Wearing of Uniform:

Cadets will wear an Army issued uniform four times a week and will be formerly inspected once a week for a graded inspection.  The JROTC program is a uniformed program where discipline is judged, in part, by the manner in which a cadet wears a prescribed uniform as well as by the individual’s personal appearance.  Hair will not fall over the eyebrows or extend below the bottom edge of the collar.

Males:  The face will be clean-shaven, except for permitted mustaches.  Males are not authorized to wear braids, cornrows, or dreadlocks (unkempt, twisted, matted, individual parts of hair).

Females:  Hairstyles will not interfere with proper wearing of the military headgear. Females may wear braids or cornrows as long as the braided style is conservative and he braids and cornrows lie snugly over the head.

Disenrollment from JROTC:  Students may be disenrolled from JROTC if they:

a.       Withdraw from school

b.      Demonstrate ineptitude for leadership training indicated by a general lack of adaptability

c.       Fail to keep an acceptable standard of academic achievement, conduct, appearance, or attendance

d.      Exhibits undesirable character traits such as lying, cheating or stealing, unauthorized possession of illegal drugs or substances, or exhibits an indifference to and lack of interest in citizenship and leadership training.

Homework – The Courses require most of the work to be done in the class.  Instructors, however, may find it necessary to assign homework.

Class work / Daily Grades / Daily Projects – A great amount of the work that you will receive credit for is completed in class.

Recovery Policy – Students who wish to make up work past the acceptable due dates may consult with their instructor to do so.  When missed work is completed, the recovery grade for a perfectly completed assignment will be at the instructor’s discretion.

JROTC Activity Fee:  A periodic activity fee will be assessed for attendance on field trips and team competitions.  Small fees are charged for personal uniform items.
