On Wednesday, February 16, the Sarasota Military Academy Rifle Team traveled to Alabama with the assistance and support of six (6) outstanding parents whom without their help, we could have never made the trip.  The invitation to the Army Service Air Rifle Championships is based on a preliminary match in November.  Our team was one of only two JROTC programs in the world to have both a Sporter and Precision team invited to compete.

The young Sporter team included senior Thomas Myers, junior
Robin Chastain, and freshmen Kevin Casey, Savannah Cochrane and Joe Bein.  The team performed extremely well with a number of personal highs (Casey, Chastain, Cochrane, and Bein) and the team moving up 5 positions, including the top
Sporter team in the state.

Our Precision team is among the top Precision marksmen in the country.  At the end of competition on Saturday, February 19, our team had earned the number 5 ranking in the country in Army JROTC and an invitation to the National JROTC Air Rifle Championships March 24-26 back in Anniston, Alabama.  Individually, cadets William Wutzer and Seth Day tied for the 8th position.  In their 5 shot shoot-off, Wutzer edged Day by 1 point.  During the finals of the top 8 shooters, Wutzer moved from number 8 to 7th overall.

Our team is dedicated to the traditions of excellence which we exhibit on a worldwide stage.  Without the support of the parents and the school, these cadets could not accomplish the goals they have set for themselves.  Thank you.

Last but not least, thank you to the Parent Teacher Cadet Council (PTCC) for their financial support to provide a portion of the fuel expenses and SMA for providing fuel for and use of the Suburban.  These two provisions along with the diligence of parents and cadets in fundraising opportunities provided the financial resources which made this trip possible.

We need everyone’s help in raising the necessary funds to compete at the National JROTC Championships in AL March 24-26, followed by our US Army Junior Open Championships March 28-30 at Fort Benning, Georgia.  Please support the upcoming Rifle Team fundraisers and Raffles

The Sarasota Military Academy Rifle Team, both Sporter and Precision are among the elite marksmen in the country.  Once again, our team has earned an invitation to the Army JROTC Service Championships.  SMA is one of only two schools in the world that has a spot for both the Sporter and Precision class or shooters.

The team will compete in Anniston, Alabama in the Championships February 17-19, 2011.  Team members for Sporter are Robin Chastain (Jr), Thomas Myers (Sr), Kevin Casey (Fr), Savannah Cochrane (Fr) and Joe Bein (Fr).  Precision team consists of Seth Day (Sr), William Wutzer (Sr), Josh Yoder (Jr) and Hana Kenny (So).

Our team is dedicated to the traditions of excellence which we are known for worldwide.  Without the support of the parents and the school, these cadets could not accomplish these difficult goals.

Thank you not only to these cadets, but the remaining team members as well: Tyler Lambert (Precision-So), Nate Yoder (Sporter-Fr), Dalton Jenkins (Sporter-Fr), and Jacob Meyer (Sporter-Fr).

The SMA Rifle team and prospective members attended the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s Air Rifle Camp in Anniston, Alabama July 26-30, 2010.  Camp was followed by early tryouts this year which started August 10, 2010.  With the implementation of these two changes to previous years, our team’s success will reach levels which have not yet achieved.

Twelve cadets from SMA including four Precision and eight Sporter attended the weeklong camp along with Warrant Officer Hobson and our chaperone and team president Annette Kenny.

The precision team consisting of; two seniors (Seth Day + William Wutzer), a junior (Josh Yoder) and sophomore (Tyler Lambert), looks promising for the 2010-2011 Air Rifle competition year.  This was clear after the culminating 3 x 20 match at the end of camp and SMA taking 1st and 2nd place individuals in Josh Yoder and Seth Day respectively.

Our sporter shooters included two incoming ninth graders and a tenth grader who is new to the team.  This year is a rebuilding year for our sporter shooters and will be the foundation for the future.  The following results proved our excellence in marksmanship in the 3 x 20 match at camp; 1st place Dylan Olree, 2nd place Hana Kenny, and 4th place Robin Chastain.  Dylan Olree has since moved on from the Rifle team to prepare for his future beyond high school, as this is his senior year and will graduate at its conclusion.

Some thirty five incoming cadets showed up for rifle team tryouts.  As their peers were having their last few days of sun and fun, these cadets were present for Marksmanship Training and Testing, followed by hands on shooting at our range at SMA.

When the last pellet was fired, our team was established for this year.  In addition to our 1 each Senior, Junior and Sophomore for sporter, we picked up 8 freshmen and 1 sophomore.  Our team make-up is a nice fit to go along with our 2 seniors, 1 junior and 1 sophomore in the precision class.

The Sporter Team includes the following: Senior Thomas Myers; Junior Robin Chastain; Sophomores Chris Conlon, Hana Kenny, Emily Petrecca, and Erin Smith; Freshmen Joe Bein,      Alex Blake, Savannah Cochrane, Kevin Casey, Dalton Jenkins, Paige Miller, Jacob Meyer, and Nate Yoder.

Our Precision Team will include the following: Senior coming into his fourth year and Team Co-Captain William Wutzer; third year and top precision shooter last year Seth Day; third year on the team and last year’s top sporter shooter in a close race with Wutzer is Junior Josh Yoder; and finally, sophomore and second year team member Tyler Lambert.

Dedication, Sacrifice, and Commitment is our guide to success…
