Major McClaugherty
Department Chair, Spanish, and E.S.O.Lemail: vera_mcclaugherty@srqit.sarasota.k12.fl.us !Bienvenidos! Bienvenues! Salve!Welcome to the Foreign Language Department!
The National
Security Language Initiative (NSLI), a plan to further strengthen
national security and prosperity in the 21st century through
education, especially in developing foreign language skills such as
American Sign Language, Chinese, French, Latin and Spanish has been
launched by the government.
Our courses offer an ideal blend of solid teaching methods and new, contemporary features, which are the source of vitality, variety, and challenge of our comprehensive language curriculum. The focus of the Department is on language and real-life contexts, giving cadets the skills to make friends and function in situations featuring the target language. Each unit contains: Vocabulary in logical thematic groups. New vocabulary is introduced by photographs or illustrations and then integrated into a context or setting. Important grammar points are reinforced in charts. Practice ensures that cadets progress from simple repetition to actual production of the new structure. Conversation and Pronunciation components help cadets practice their oral communication skills. Cultural readings, videos and guest speakers provide information on everyday life and culture. Oral and written activities which test the cadet’s mastery of the unit’s communicative goals are given throughout the semester.
