Welcome!  We are so excited that you want to learn Mandarin Chinese!

You are making the first step to experience a language that over one billion of people are using in their daily lives!! Congratulations!

Mission For Success

NO FEAR LEARNING CHINESE!

How do students succeed in Mandarin Chinese? Good instruction and good study skills to practice and reinforce the new material will help your child succeed. S.M.A. students learn the vocabulary, conversation skills, cultural diversity, and Chinese history they need to be successful in class through individualized instruction by experienced professional teachers. All our students start out with an “A”. It is up to them and their individual work ethic to keep it. Students can expect to spend 20 minutes each evening learning the new lesson and reviewing the previous lesson. As teachers we will provide all the materials and time in class needed for students to feel comfortable reading and speaking in Mandarin Chinese.

Our goal is for students to move beyond writing in the workbook and reading from the textbook to be able to initiate their own conversation in speaking Mandarin Chinese with others. Students in this class will practice conversational skills both during class time, and at home using websites with audio Chinese dialogue, as well as the Chinese Made Easy language CD they can sign out from the teacher. The more students practice speaking and using Mandarin Chinese at home and during class, the better their conversation skills will be. Learning Mandarin Chinese may be one of the most important influences in a person’s life.

The demand for business people who know Chinese (Mandarin) is skyrocketing.
Speaking even a little Chinese can greatly enhance your international business relations!

Chinese is the #1 spoken language in the world!
There are more people speaking Chinese than English.  It’s the number one spoken language in the world.

There are more than 1 billion people who speak Chinese.
One out of five people in the world is Chinese.

Dear Parents and Students:

There is a lot of excitement as we start our school year. My expectations for your child in Mandarin Chinese are as follows:

* To prepare for class                            * To treat others with respect

* To be treated with respect                   * To work independently at home

* To be conscientious                            * To do their own work

* To cooperate                                      * To enjoy Mandarin Chinese class

* To give their best effort                       * To ask lots of questions

Mandarin Chinese І will be using the textbook,
CD and workbook series Chinese Made Easy
І            .
Students first have to learn the “Pinyin” form of writing
and the “tones” used to speak the new vocabulary words.
Soon students will be able to read, write, listen and
speak simple and basic Mandarin Chinese. Chinese
culture will be introduced within the curriculum

Goals for our Mandarin Chinese students:

  • Become active learners in class.

·         Be able to recognize and memorize phonetic symbols using ”Pinyin”

  • Be able to differentiate tones used for correct pronunciation (auditory)
  • Memorize radicals and simple characters
  • Make easy sentences and translate them between English and Mandarin Chinese
  • Start basic conversation and respond to questions in Mandarin Chinese

·         To test with a minimum of 80% in accuracy every Tuesday and Thursday

·         To test with a minimum of 80% in accuracy on the two testes and the final

Expectations for exacting work from our Mandarin Chinese students:

  • Homework in the workbook will only be accepted if it is written in pencil. No pen please. Students who fail to follow will receive 5 points deduction on the work.
  • Students are responsible to check their Workbooks and to correct any mistakes. The correct answers will be given by the instructor during class every week. This will count towards the final grade.
  • Students are responsible for downloading Homework from the SMA website.
  • Credit is given for Homework turned in on the due date.  Please watch your deadlines carefully.  Work turned in late will not receive full credit.
  • Students can get help on any lesson or assignment, review the vocabulary words or practice speaking with the instructor during lunch every Wednesday and Friday.

Class rules:

  • Students are expected to listen to the instructor and follow classroom procedures established by S.M.A. (See SMA Handbook)
  • Each student will have their own textbook and workbook. The textbooks are not to be written in, they belong to the school; the workbooks can be kept by the students. If the text book and workbook are lost or damaged there will be a significant charge to replace them.
  • Class work will count as Homework. The grade will count towards the students final grade.
  • Students cannot meet the requirements of this class without both a textbook and a workbook. Fail to follow will receive 5 points deduction on the Employability.
  • It is the student’s responsibility to make sure to go to the bathroom before the class starts. Please do not ask to go to the bathroom during the class unless it is an emergency.
  • Gum, cell phones and other electronic devices should not be used during the class period.
  • Students must attend class on time.
  • Students who cannot follow the class rules will receive deduction on the employability, detention or referral. (Please read SMA Handbook, SMA POLICY 211 – DISCIPLINE)

Absences:

Absences will be marked unexcused until and unless student provides a written excuse from a parent/guardian for faculty signature. Written excuses are required, regardless of whether or not the parent called or contacted the school prior to or on the day of a student’s absence.

Students are responsible for finding out what was missed and for making up missed work, quiz and assignments. Work missed due to absences for appointments are due same day or upon immediate return to school.  Work missed due to absences from illness is due within two days time of your return to school. (See SMA Handbook J. ATTENDANCE AND MAKE-UP WORK)

Tests/Quizzes:

Students will take a test/quiz on every Tuesday and Thursday covering the material from the previous classes. These tests/quizzes will be graded and will count towards the final grade.

If a student misses a test/quiz due to absence, he/she will be required to make it up on the day of his/her return or the quiz will be marked as zero.

Tests and quizzes will show the ratio of points achieved to the possible with scores recorded as a percentage.  These percentages are not holistic grades that reflect effort, progress, citizenship, etc, but are accurate assessments of material mastered.

Assignments and Projects:

Students are responsible for handing in the assignment/projects on time.

To encourage good time management and reward a healthy work ethic student who decides to hand assignments in early will receive extra points for their extra effort.  There will be an early-bird date assigned by the instructor and the student will receive 10 additional points into the assignment/project’s final grade.

Here is the guide of grading points if the assignment/project is not received on the due date:
