Syllabus

Latin 1

 

Objective:

To study and learn the Latin language; to learn how the Latin language influenced the English to the present day; to study Roman culture and its influences in our Western Civilization. 

Outline:

Grammar:

1.      recognizing the basic language form

2.      declining nouns

3.      Conjugating verbs- regular and irregular

4.      Imperative forms

5.      Declining first, second, and third declension adjectives

6.      Knowing the agreements of nouns and adjectives

7.      Identification and writing cardinal and Roan numerals

8.      Declining and translating pronouns

9.      Knows the use of case

Vocabulary:

1.      Learns the Latin vocabulary in order to increase one’s English

2.      Recognizes Latin roots from which English words derived

3.      Identifies Latin prefixes/suffixes

4.      Identify and translate certain Latin phrases, mottos, and abbreviations commonly used in English

Translation:

1.      Translates passages from Latin to English and English to Latin.

Cultural and Historical:

1.      Identify the cultural and historical role of Rome in the development of Western Civilization of which the United States is a part of the development

2.      Understands Roman civilization

Roman and Greek mythology:

1.      Identify and learn about the Roman and Greek Olympian Gods

2.      Acquire a knowledge of Roman family life including the home, food, clothing, religions, etc.

Latin 1

Employability: Marks: each student will be given 100 pts (1/5 of the quarter mark)

The following points will deducted accordingly:

1.      Unexcused absence  10pts

2.      Tardiness (unexcused) 3 pts

3.      Vulgarity  5pts

4.      Homework (each day not submitted)  3 pts

5.      Borrowing papers, penciels, pens, etc  2 pts

                Other standards not in accordance with military expectations.  2 pts

N.B. Research paper must be typed:

            a. for the A and B papers- double spaced

            b. for the C paper- single spaced

N.B. Sources:

            One book, one periodical (newspaper or magazine), one volume of an Encyclopedia; one on-line source.  Other additional sources may be multiple of the above.

Examinations: major exams will be based upon topic completed, and will consist of multiple choice questions and one or more essays.  There will be, from time to time, short exams, all of which will equal one major exam.

Final Exam: will consist of 100 questions.

Quarter Marks: are determined by the average of various exams, special reports, and employability mark.  Achieving next letter grade, i.e. in order to move from one letter grade to another, the student must begin with 70, 80, 90.  79.9 does not equal 80, etc.

Conduct in Class: as required in the military code and in our Western Civilization (based upon Roman Law and Government, Greek Philosophy, Judaism and Christianity).
