Captain Ed Whitehead
On behalf of the Sarasota Military Academy, I welcome you and your child to our course: An Introduction to the Criminal Justice System. I spent the last 32 years as a law enforcement officer with the Sarasota Police Department, retiring at the rank of Deputy Chief. I look forward to sharing my knowledge and experiences with the students here. I want to see all our students succeed. Part of my career included recruiting and making hiring recommendations for the Department. In this capacity, I saw many people who were unable to fulfill their life ambition to become a police officer because of bad decisions or choices they made as young adults. Many others failed to properly prepare themselves for such a career. Our goal in this class is to expose the student to the many components that make up the criminal justice system. Emphasis will be place on those skills, training and personal traits necessary for a person to be successful in one of the many careers available in the Criminal Justice System, if that is their choice. This course will, by design, explore Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Operations. A companion course beginning in January 2008 will focus on Forensics and Crime Scene Investigations.
