HEAT DISORDERS HEALTH BULLETIN

During hot Florida days, certain health risks exist for students who participate in outdoor activities. All students are at risk for heat disorders. Predisposing factors include:

v    Medications, including many used for allergies

v    Inappropriate clothing

v    Obesity

v    Poor conditioning

v    Acute or chronic illness (heart problems)

Listed below are some suggestions for preventing heat disorders. Keep them in mind when planning outdoor activities.

1.     Water is the best source for hydration. Free access to water is essential wit the temperatures of the water being 59 to 72 degrees. Encourage your cadets to drink 10 to 20 ounces of water two hours prior to the activity. Hydration prior to the activity is just as important as hydration during the activity. Avoid caffeine drinks (including soft drinks) since they act as a diuretic. Encourage your cadet to have a filled water bottle available for use during events.

2.     Lightweight, natural-fiber clothing is recommended.

3.     Encourage sunscreen usage between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
