AT THE 2010 FLORIDA STATE DRILL MEET There are 140 Army JROTC programs in the State of Florida. Each of those schools compete at their district level, and the top 3 teams in each event qualify for State Competition. This year, approximately 36 schools qualified for the State Meet. Look at those numbers, and you’ll realize how steep the competition is at state level! The top 5 teams in each event are awarded trophies at the State Meet. Your SMA drill team performs phenomenally at each meet they enter, and they did so at this meet. Four of our teams placed in the top 3 in their events, and 4 cadets won individual medals in the Armed Drill Knockout. 2nd Place: Male Armed Squad, commanded by Mike Martino 3rd Place: Male Armed Platoon, commanded by Louis Fischer 3rd Place: Female Unarmed Squad, commanded by Monica Cubillos 3rd Place: Female Exhibition Squad, commanded by Kylie Gouriluk
Individual Armed Drill Medals went to: Michael Ortiz, Stephen Butalla, Louis Fischer, and Andrew Guinart
CONGRATULATIONS!
More important than trophies, however, is the recognition of the hard work, dedication, humility, and effort of the drill team members, for these attributes are necessary to survive the long season, let alone win in subjective competitions. What these cadets develop every year is an increasing sense of self-confidence, personal discipline, and the ability to lead others, and isn’t that what we’re all about in Army JROTC? Yes! A large percentage of SMA’s cadet leadership hones their skills in Drill Team and trains our new cadets to lead. Hats off to you, SMA Drill Team Members! You do us all proud and help produce SMA’s future leaders! Teamwork and tenacity: the keys to success! BORN TO MARCH, TRAINED TO DRILL, LIVE TO LEAD, AND ALWAYS WILL! DRILL TEAM!

Pictured here are Brandy Hauser, Duncan Pressey, Rachel Peters, Mario Ferrucci, and Molly Herbert along with the Principal of Cyesis, some of the babies from Cyesis, and one of the nursery aides. These students read children stories to the babies while the mommies watched. This is the fourth year that SMA has gone on Valentine's Day to Cyesis to read with the mommies and babies for a program called "For the Love of Reading" sponsored by Sarasota Reading Council (SRC). SRC has sponsored this event for 6 years now. The hope is that by modeling reading to the babies the mommies will learn to make it a life-long habit. SRC also gives a book and accompanying stuffed animal to each baby.

Colonel Kennedy took cadets Katie Cerchio, Monica Cubillos, and Major Wasserman to January's SARASOTA SISTER CITIES lunch meeting on 1/20/10. Guests heard about Tel Mond, our Israeli sister city, and the efforts of the Shahak family to promote peace between Israeli Arabs and Jews. Bat-Chen Shahak was murdered by a suicide bomber on her 15th birthday in 1996, and her parents have dedicated their lives to working for peace and understanding in her memory. Katie and Monica are holding some of the "kites for peace" that Arab and Jewish make TOGETHER as part of the Shahak's ongoing program. The children are brought together to work on art projects and to get to know one another as individuals rather than as stereotypes.
